ntmc The Traditional Medical Massage of Thailand, more commonly known as Thai Massage, is one of the world’s oldest healing therapeutic agents. A traditional Thai massage is a unique form of bodywork that incorporates Hatha Yoga, acupressure, and reflexology with origins dating back 2500 years. The roots of the Thai massage are traced back to the founder of the practice, Komapaj: a doctor, friend and contemporary to Gautama Buddha. Ancient medical texts were carved in stone in Bangkok. These stone inscriptions still sit within the walls of the Wat Po temple in Bangkok . Thai massage blends styles from its Asian neighbors passed down through the generations. The Thai people, like many others in the orient, saw illness as an imbalance in the body, mind and spirit. They would seek help at the local temple. They were treated with four elements of traditional Thai medicine:1. Nutritional - Counseling (focusing on diet); 2. Herbs - given both internally and externally; 3. Spiritual Counseling - primarily meditation and the Buddhist principles; 4. Thai Massage - which forms the backbone of the physical treatment. Unlike the scooping and continuous strokes of the Western massage, the Thai method uses pressure points, muscle stretching and compression performed in a rhythmic movement of gentle rocking. Therapists not only use their hands to free tension from the client's body, but also their feet, forearms, knees and elbows are used. The work is one fully clothed and no oils are required. This procedure is performed on a floor mat allowing full use of the therapist's body.
